Fireplace's FAQs
Do bioethanol fireplaces produce heat?
Yes, although it does depend upon the size of the fireplace and also the size of the room itself. But a fire of an appropriate size can produce a good level of heat when considered properly in terms of its actual output and how it is positioned in the space. Bioethanol fires are a secondary source of heat that deliver a myriad of lifestyle benefits that can’t be achieved from primary heat sources such as radiators or reverse cycle air conditioning.
How much is bioethanol these days?
Based on calculations we've done in the USA, burning bioethanol is 35% cheaper than burning propane. The cost to burn bioethanol is a little more expensive than gas BUT that's only a talking point after you recover the significantly higher costs to install gas. Installing a bioethanol fire is significantly cheaper.
Can I uninstall my bioethanol fireplace and reinstall if I renovated?

Is their heat output similar to a gas heater?
Burning bioethanol is similar to gas, but the room doesn't dry out like it does with gas - a more gentle, softer heat is created. Heat-wise, it depends on the models being compared. Some of our bioethanol burners output 15,000 BTU and can heat up to 60sqm of living space. Bioethanol is not, however, on an adjustable thermostat. Some may be turned up and down, but you can't control the room temperature in the same way as you do with gas on mains

Why use bioethanol?
Bioethanol, a renewable energy, is the cleanest and most efficient fuel on the market, which means there are no emissions and no soot or ash to clean up.
Why is it sustainable?
During combustion, the emissions from bioethanol produce heat, steam and a small amount of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is then absorbed by plants and processed by photosynthesis to help the plant grow. This process makes bioethanol a carbon-neutral fuel source.
How is bioethanol made?
Bioethanol, or simply ethanol, is a renewable energy source made by fermenting sugars and starch components of plant by-products (mainly sugarcane and crops like grain) using yeast. It is also made from corn, potatoes, milk, rice, beetroot and, more recently, grapes.

Do ethanol fireplaces smell?
All heating appliances have their own smell be it gas, wood or electric - ethanol fireplaces are no different. e-NRG ethanol fuel is made of fermented plants like sugarcane or corn and is essentially a liquid alcohol. To safely make “de-natured” and unfit for consumption, substances have been added. The burning of these substances may cause a slight smell upon initial lighting and when the flame is extinguished – similar to when you blow out a candle. e-NRG ethanol fuel is the only fuel recommended for your EcoSmart Fire ethanol fireplace. e-NRG ethanol fuel has the lowest odor and longest burn time on the market. The nice thing about using ethanol is that it’s not dry like gas or smokey like wood.
Can I extinguish my ethanol fireplace before the fuel has burnt?
Yes, you can turn your EcoSmart Fire ethanol burner off at any given time, even if there is ethanol still left in the burner. It is recommended however, that you leave it to burn until it completely runs out. The shut off mechanism is there for security and safety for those times when you need to leave the house, as it is not safe to leave a fire unattended. You need to wait until your appliance cools to room temperature (60 minutes) before re-igniting, this is because hot vapours are a hazard and may cause a strong, initial ignition if the ethanol has not cooled long enough. This is also to ensure that the flame has been totally extinguished and that the appliance is safe to refuel if the amount of fuel in the burner at that time is insufficient for your next ignition / use.
How much does it cost to maintain an ethanol fireplace?
EcoSmart Fire’s ethanol fireplaces require little maintenance. It is important to keep the lid closed when not in use to keep debris out of the ethanol burner that can cause corrosion and damages. The 304 stainless steel tank is built to last a lifetime if proper cleaning procedures are done when needed.
What maintenance is required for ethanol fireplaces?
Clean your EcoSmart Fire unit after you have used 50 liters [13.20 Gal.] of fuel or as soon as you notice black deposits on or near the burner of the ethanol fireplace. Black marks can be removed from the stone, solid surfaces or stainless steel with a mild abrasive washing product such as JIF or similar. It is recommended to test a small area first to ensure the cleaning product chosen is appropriate and will not mark or damage the surface. Burners can be washed as required in hot soapy water (even in your dishwasher) from time to time and the internal mechanics won’t deteriorate like some other brands as all internal parts are stainless steel.
Do I need to service my ethanol fireplace in any way?
Yes, normal maintenance and care is very important! Instructions are included in the Installation, Operating and Maintenance Manual supplied with your EcoSmart Fire product.
How do I clean my EcoSmart Fire ethanol burner?
Cleaning of the ethanol burner should be done only after you have used 50 litres of fuel or as soon as you notice a black residue forming around or on the burner. Before starting, make sure the burner is off, empty of ethanol, and at room temperature. Spray a multi-purpose cleaner on the surface of the burner and wipe with cloth, making sure to wipe in the direction of the grain. If material has fallen into the ethanol fireplace burner use a vacuum cleaner to remove debris through the burner opening. If your burner smells unusually strong after extensive use, remove the empty and room temperature burner from its surround and wash in hot, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly under running water and wait until the burner is completely dry before placing it back into its surround and reusing. View this video of the simple cleaning process here: https://youtu.be/VqHg9mXOc0U
Note: Stainless steel will rust or corrode over time if contamination or debris is not cleaned or removed immediately. When not in use, we recommend that you protect your ethanol fireplace from water damage or corrosion with a protective cover and the regular use of the burner lid included with your model.
Can other ethanol brands be used in place of e-NRG?
e-NRG is the only bioethanol fuel recommended for your ethanol fireplace. e-NRG has been produced for the lowest odor, most vibrant flame, and longest burn time on the market. The e-NRG fuel packaging, operational procedure, accessories and formula has undergone rigorous third party testing with all EcoSmart Fire ethanol fireplaces. We have not worked with or tested other bioethanol fuel brands in conjunction with our burners and cannot speak to their performance or safety. Other bioethanol fuel brands can also leave residue or unsightly staining. Use of any other ethanol fuel may damage your unit and void your warranty. You can purchase e-NRG ethanol fuel at e-nrg.com for fast and free shipping.
How safe are bioethanol fireplaces?
EcoSmart Fire’s operating tools, procedures, and proprietary technologies were developed with safety as our top priority. Made from 304-grade stainless steel, EcoSmart Fire’s ethanol fireplace burners go through a deep-draw fabrication process that eliminates the potential for dangerous leaks. Additionally, our patented filling point is separated from the ignition zone and engineered so that the jerry can spout is fully supported prior to releasing the fuel supply. This eliminates the usual splash and spills that would otherwise occur when fuel is decanted into the burner while simultaneously reinforcing the maximum fill line within the burner. EcoSmart Fire’s ethanol fireplaces release heat, carbon dioxide (the same stuff we exhale) and steam. Allowing you to enjoy a clean-burning flame without the soot, smoke, ash or other harmful substances emitted by traditional wood burning fireplaces. When selecting an installation location for your ethanol fireplace it is important to consider the required minimum room sizes and clearances. Please reference our installation manual for more information.
Do EcoSmart Fire ethanol fireplaces give off any fumes or gases?
Bioethanol fuel is made of fermented plants like sugarcane or corn and is essentially a liquid alcohol. To safely make “de-natured” and unfit for consumption, substances have been added. Is this the same ethanol I can buy at gas stations?
No. The ethanol sold at gas stations is in no way similar to e-NRG.
Is it required that I use a jerry can to operate e-NRG or can I pour e-NRG directly into the burner?
Yes, we provide jerry cans, lighting rods and lighters with every burner because we want you to have the highest quality and safest experience possible when using our products. The jerry can ensures that you don’t splash ethanol when pouring or overfill the burner.
If you add the adaptor to the e-NRG bottle the Safety Spout can be connected to the bottle - only then can you use the e-NRG bottle to fill the burner. Filling from the bottle without an attached safety spout can result in serious injury.
Will my EcoSmart Fire heat the room?
All EcoSmart Fires are ventless, meaning all the heat stays in the room rather than escaping up a flue. Increased heat retention means increased fuel efficiency and a better chance of staying warm. Is e-NRG safe to store in my home or workspace?
Yes. e-NRG is a stable fuel source and will not pose any safety threat as long as it is stored away from an open flame.
Does e-NRG bio ethanol burn yellow or blue?
e-NRG Bioethanol is formulated to consistently burn its signature bright orange colour so you get maximum enjoyment out of your ethanol burning fireplace.
Does e-NRG bioethanol smell?
Bioethanol has substances added to it in order for it to be labelled ‘de-natured’. The burning of these substances may cause a slight smell upon initial lighting and will dissipate with time. There is also a slight odour once the flame is extinguished – similar to when you blow out a candle. This also dissipates into the air.
Where can I find the Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?
Safety
e-NRG offers proprietary operating tools and procedures that include two recommended ways to safely refill your ventless liquid ethanol fireplace.
Use the Bottle Adaptor and Safety Nozzle to quickly and easily refill directly from our bottles into an EcoSmart Fire burner.
When using e-NRG bioethanol in a ventless liquid ethanol fireplace that does NOT have an EcoSmart Fire burner, the fuel should be decanted into an approved Jerry Can fitted with a flame arrester before fueling. This method may also be used if you’d like to refill more than one bottle at a time.
Flame arrester
For your safety, e-NRG bioethanol bottles are fitted with a flame arrester.
The flame arrester is inserted into the mouth of the bottle and serves to stop the flammable liquid from igniting if it comes into contact with vapours, a spark, or a live flame.
Fuel containers without flame arresters, if used improperly, can result in the fuel igniting within the container, which may cause property damage or personal injury.
Is e-NRG bioethanol the same as gel fuel? Can I use gel fuel in my fire?
e-NRG is a liquid fuel and is NOT the same as gel fuels. Gel fuels have added thickening agents that can reduce the heat output and fuel efficiency. It can also leave sticky residue in the burner, which will eventually affect safe operation. Gel fuels are used only on burners specifically designed to use them. EcoSmart Fires are designed and manufactured to burn only e-NRG liquid ethanol. Other fuels, especially gels, are not recommended. In fact, the use of brands other than e-NRG voids the burner’s warranty.
Can I extinguish the fireplace before the fuel has burnt?
Yes, you can turn your EcoSmart Fire burner off at any given time, even if there is ethanol still left in the burner. It is recommended however, that you leave it to burn until it completely runs out. The shut off mechanism is there for security and safety for those times when you need to leave the house, as it is not safe to leave a fire unattended. Please wait 60 minutes before relighting the ethanol after extinguishing it to let the ethanol cool. Built up vapours may cause a strong, initial ignition if the ethanol has not cooled long enough.
For all other brands refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
Can I return my product without the original box and accessories?
In order to be fully covered under warranty, the product must be returned in its original packaging with accessories. If any items are missing, or if replacement packaging must be provided, the associated costs will be deducted from the credit or refund.
What if I have modified the product?
If the product has been modified or altered in any way, it will not be covered under warranty unless the modifications were approved in writing by MAD Design Group. However, we are happy to provide assistance with any issues you are experiencing.
If I purchased from a retailer, can I contact MAD Design Group directly for warranty?
It is best to contact the retailer where you made your purchase. The retailer will help you resolve the issue or submit the warranty claim on your behalf.
What does warranty actually cover?

What is the difference between gel and EcoSmart Fire’s ethanol fireplaces?
There are key differences between gel fireplaces and ethanol fireplaces in terms of operation and performance. Gel fireplaces are operated by inserting and lighting tin cans filled with gel. The cans act as the burner mechanism. Gel fireplaces do not produce a long coherent flame as known from ethanol fireplaces and can be difficult to extinguish. EcoSmart Fire’s ethanol fireplaces use a clean burning liquid fuel made with fermented plants. The fuel is housed in a ethanol burner that allows for safe and easy operation. Ethanol fireplaces produce a beautiful, vibrant dancing flame. Gel fuel should never be used within an ethanol fireplace.
Are ethanol fireplaces good for the environment?
EcoSmart Fire’s ethanol fireplace burners and fireplace inserts, when paired with our e-NRG bioethanol fuel are clean burning with the only byproduct being heat, steam and carbon dioxide (the same stuff we exhale). What is an ethanol fireplace?
An ethanol fireplace is a ventless fireplace that is powered by bioethanol fuel. Plants like corn or sugarcane are fermented to make bioethanol fuel. Ethanol fireplaces produce a beautiful, warm and vibrant flame. Clean burning and eco-friendly, ethanol fires release heat, carbon dioxide (the same stuff we exhale) and steam. Ethanol fires do not require a chimney, vent, gas line, or electricity and can be installed virtually anywhere - indoors or outdoors. EcoSmart Fire offers a variety of ethanol fireplace options including ethanol burners for a custom fireplace design, freestanding and portable fireplaces, ready to install built-in wall ethanol fireplace inserts, and ethanol fire pits and fire tables.
